IG Video Anxiety: It's Real, and Here's How You Overcome It

Updated: May 29, 2023

Don't you just hate it when you watch an IGTV video or a story, and the person is just so gosh darn perfect on camera? You ask yourself, "How do they do it?"

Some people just love the camera and are complete naturals, but a majority of folks probably share the same fears and anxiety you have when faced with the dreaded IG selfie video.

Right before you tap the record button, you think:

  • Is anyone going to care about what I say?

  • What will people think?

  • Do I look too self-serving?

  • How do I look?

  • Ugh, I'm having a bad hair day. I'll just film tomorrow.

  • What if I make a mistake?

  • Ugh, I messed up... let me do that over (5 minutes later)... Ugh, I messed up, let me do that over.

I know what you're thinking because I think it myself! Yes, I studied broadcast journalism and have had some time being on-camera, but there is just something about that selfie mode and Instagram that makes me feel awkward, and riding the struggle bus.

Here's the thing...

You don't have to be on camera telling everyone when you're eating and when... it's not a 24/7 kind of thing. It doesn't really even have to be an everyday kind of thing, but it's important that you hop in front of the camera a few times a week to talk to your followers and current (and potential) customers.

You can't post a graphic saying you're great at what you do and expect someone to automatically run to her phone for a meeting. They have no idea who you are, what you're like, and why you're great. They need to know you in the digital space and for quite some time. Graphics can't properly introduce you to the people you aim to serve.

These are my 5 tips, which have helped me reduce the pressure I put on myself before I film a video. They've helped me and hopefully, they'll make you 🎶 shine bright like a diamond 🎶 and feel like a BOSS before you tap record.

And, guess what?! I filmed a video about it! Press play to hear my tips!

My Five Tips:

  1. Ain't No Shame In Having a Filter Game

  2. Jot Down Bullet Points

  3. Embrace the Mistakes

  4. Be True to You

  5. Use Stickers!
